Dumbing down
Monday, April 27, 2009 at 07:12AM The charity Beatbullying is reporting more and more cases of young people *dumbing down* in order to avoid being bullied. It's especially prevalent in boys, who pretend not to be clever just to divert harrassment and bullying from jealous classmates.
It's a recurring and increasing theme - just look at the recent bullying of the Olympic athlete Tom Daly. Now it's been widely reported today that Holly Steele, the young singer on Saturday's Britain's Got Talent, has recieved a raft of abusive, bullying comments about her performance via YouTube.
More of the same vitriol and jealousy - these young people have clearly got nothing better to do. But doesn't this point to a wider issue of the dangers of anonymity online? Perhaps if users weren't able to hide behind a variety of fake profiles they'd be less inclined to write such bile in the first place.
