The Northern Grid for Learning commissioned Redmoth to develop a set of activities for the Higher Order Thinking Skills initiative, based on the theme of riverside regeneration. The activities were designed to be used by individual pupils and were written to promote Higher Order Thinking Skills for pupils at Key Stages 3 and 4. Discussion of the activities is encouraged along with time to reflect on the thinking skills involved, for example, what did the pupils actually do, what strategies did they use to solve the problems, were these strategies effective?

Redmoth worked with a team of teachers and academics seconded for the project to develop the resources. Each activity has guidance notes available in the teachers' notes section and printable resources in the resources section. The printable resources mean that pupils away from the computer can do all or parts of the activities.

Currently, there are four activities, one for each of the subjects:

• maths
• science
• geography
• design and technology
